BREAKING NEWS: The News Media’s ‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’

Back in the day when TV stations broke into “regular scheduled programming” it would do so for only extremely important breaking news. I’m talking the Challenger explosion or Shots fired at the President. Now in today’s digital age, everything is Breaking News. Everything gets a big red banner alert. Michael Phelps being selected to carry the US flag into the Olympics is not breaking news, nor is Hilary Clinton talking on the campaign trail. Breaking News becomes less breaking and more news-to-ignore when it’s an hourly occurrence. The red banner becomes just another headline and not a purposeful design disruption to draw your eye. Breaking News is breaking the news.
